Newest Members of the Farm

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

The holidays sure were eventful around here. After an unplanned, extended stay in St. Louis, due to car trouble, we now have a new (but used) car and are finally back on the farm.

It has been so hectic, I have not been able to share the amazing news!

We have two lovely, yummy additions to the farm.

A friend of ours needed somewhere to harbor two calves until they were ready to be butchered. Coincidentally, we have some fenced in pasture that was sitting unused.

This was a match made in heaven.

She offered us half of the meat in exchange for them staying on our land.

They dropped them off at the farm, helped us close them in, and gave us a run-down of what we should expect... which was basically, "Water them... and call us if they get out."

For a minimum 300 lbs of local, grassfed beef come late spring... I think we can handle that.

They, being more countrified than me, named the calves. Fortunately I was not present during this part of the conversation, and I only heard about it from Tad after they had left.

"Oh, by the way, the brown one is a girl named Rosemary and the boy--" Tad tried to say, at which point I covered my ears and started singing to myself to drown out the noise.

I seem to have trouble eating things with cute animal names. So the newest members of the farm are Rosemary and Steak.

I have tried renaming Rosemary something more edible, like Hamburger, but it has not worked so far.

  1. Oh. Names, hugh? We try not to name our "eat'n" animals around here. But technically, Rosemary IS an herb, so it's kind of an eating name!

Glad you & your friend worked out the pasture/beef thing. I see a lot of pasture go totally unused here and it kills me to think somebody could be fattening something out on it.

  2. That's a great deal! I think that I would un-name them and call them cow 1 & cow 2.

  3. I would name them "tender" and "juicy", 'cause it's probably about as close to fast food burgers as you and Tad will allow yourself to get!

  4. What a wonderful deal that was! They make it look like they belong there. Congrats! Robin's suggestion of cow 1 and cow 2 made me laugh! My grandkids watch "Cat In The Hat" with thing 1 and thing 2. Ha! Ha!

  7. Carolyn Renee, Rosemary is definitely an herb, you are right! And, a delicious one at that.

Robin, Unfortunately, unnaming is not as easy as it sounds.

Jody, I will keep those in mind for the next walking steaks we get!

Veggie Pak, They do love our pasture, and the friends that are sharing them with us are impressed with how much weight they have already put on.

BrokenRoadFarm, We were definitely not planning on adding cows to our livestock any time soon, but the opportunity just presented itself.

Gingerbreadhouse, Very lucky! We are so happy with the friends we have made since moving out here.
